About the workshop:

Japanese Anime has a special place in my heart. Growing up in Asia, our childhood is filled with anime. Not just about robots and pokemon, but about our hobbies like tennis (Prince of Tennis) and board game Go (Hikaru No Go). That's the best thing about anime: there's no limit. Any hobby you’re passionate about can be turned into an anime series! Many elements in anime are very much improv: big over-the-top reactions, dramatic action sequences, harmonic group reactions, heightened tension, status play, to being a little kawaii (cute!). We’ll learn things about improv from anime in this workshop. Then, we’ll create our own anime series! Let’s improvise an anime Heroes journey as our protagonist learns poker/frisbee/Jenga to become a champion, facing one baddie to the next, and learning hard life lessons along the way.
 
About the teacher:
 
Aree Witoelar is a Norway-based improv teacher, director and producer from Indonesia. Aree is the founder and artistic director of Impro Neuf International, Norway’s most inclusive improv community, and current artistic director of Oslo Impro Festival. He believes improv is easy when you laugh with your partner through passion and curiosity. Aree is part of Stranger Things Have Happened, The Improv Speakeasy, MSG, Herring & Chopsticks, and creator of global culture Cloud Atlas. Aree has been improvising for 17 years, teaching in Europe (Norway, the Netherlands, Estonia, Finland, Germany) and Asia (Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand). His mission is to make improv a global artform where anyone can bring their culture on stage. He connects improvisers around the globe through "Aree & a Friend" with people from 65 countries. Aree loves both silly and cerebral fun with influences from Susan Messing, Jay Sukow, Will Hines, Jason Shotts and Andel Sudik. Yet the best improv is yet to come, as the East meets West.
